Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about image metadata, AI labels and privacy.

What is image metadata, and what does Meta Strip remove?

Metadata is hidden information stored inside an image file: camera or phone model, date and time, GPS location, editing software, text prompts from AI image generators, and C2PA Content Credentials. Meta Strip removes EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, PNG text chunks, comments and C2PA data, and keeps only what is needed to display the picture.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Meta Strip runs entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device and nothing is sent to a server.

Does removing metadata reduce image quality or change the format?

No. The tool cuts out the metadata blocks without re-encoding the pixels, so quality is unchanged. A JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG and a WebP stays a WebP.

Why does Instagram show an “AI info” label, and will removing metadata hide it?

Instagram and other social platforms read industry-standard signals embedded in the file, such as C2PA Content Credentials and the IPTC “Digital Source Type” field, to add labels like “AI info”. Removing the metadata removes those signals, so the label may not be added automatically. This is not guaranteed: platforms can also detect invisible watermarks or other cues, and they may ask you to disclose realistic AI-generated content yourself. Meta Strip is not affiliated with Instagram or Meta.

Is it legal to remove metadata from an image?

Removing metadata from your own images is generally legal and is a common privacy practice, for example removing GPS location before sharing a photo. Legality depends on how you use the result and where you live. Don’t use it to deceive people, impersonate someone, commit fraud, or strip copyright information from work you don’t own. Platform rules and some laws also require you to disclose realistic AI-generated content. This is general information, not legal advice.
