Frequently asked questions
Everything you need to know about resizing and compressing images.
How do I resize and compress an image?
Choose a resolution (100%, 75%, 50% or 25% of the original pixels) and a quality level, then drag your images onto the page. Each processed file downloads automatically, and you can also grab everything as a ZIP.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Image Shrink works entirely in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
Which image formats are supported?
Any image your browser can open, including JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, AVIF and SVG. By default JPG, PNG and WebP keep their format. Other formats are converted to PNG or JPG, and you can also force JPG, WebP or PNG output. Animated GIFs are saved as a single still frame.
How does the quality setting work for PNG files?
PNG is lossless, so Image Shrink lowers quality by reducing the number of colors: 256 colors at 75%, 64 at 50% and 16 at 25%. At 100% the PNG stays lossless. JPG and WebP use standard lossy compression.
Is metadata removed when I compress an image?
Yes. Images are re-encoded, which removes EXIF, GPS and other embedded metadata as a side effect.
