What Is a HEIC File?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores photos at about half the size of a JPG with similar quality, which saves space on your device.
The downside is compatibility. Many Windows PCs, Android phones, websites, and online forms can’t open HEIC files, so the photo shows up as an error or can’t be uploaded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this HEIC to JPG converter free?
Yes. The converter is completely free to use, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no limit on how many photos you convert.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. The converter uses a HEIC decoder that runs inside your web browser, so your photos never leave your device.
Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?
Yes. Select or drop several HEIC files together and each one is saved as its own JPG. Your browser may ask for permission to download multiple files the first time.
Will converting HEIC to JPG reduce photo quality?
Photos are saved at 90% JPG quality, which looks virtually identical to the original. The JPG file is usually larger than the HEIC file, because HEIC compresses more efficiently.
How do I stop my iPhone from saving photos as HEIC?
Open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG. To have photos converted automatically when you copy them to a computer, go to Settings, then Photos, and set Transfer to Mac or PC to Automatic.
Why won’t some HEIC files convert?
A small number of HEIC files, such as some Live Photos or files from newer cameras, use features that browser-based converters can’t read yet. If a photo fails, try exporting it as a JPG from the Photos app, or switch your camera to Most Compatible.
Does the JPG keep my photo’s location and camera details?
No. The converted JPG doesn’t include the original photo’s embedded details, such as location or camera model, which makes it safer to share online.
