What Is an AI File?

Can I convert AI to PNG without Adobe Illustrator?
Yes. This tool reads the PDF-compatible data that Illustrator saves inside .ai files and turns it into a PNG right in your browser, so you don’t need Illustrator or any other software.
Why won’t my AI file convert?
The converter needs the AI file to be saved with “Create PDF Compatible File” turned on, which is Illustrator’s default setting. If it was turned off, open the file in Illustrator, choose File, then Save As, check that option, and try again.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
Yes. With “Transparent background” turned on, which is the default, any area without artwork stays transparent, so logos and icons are ready to place on any design. Turn it off if you want a white background instead.
What resolution will my PNG be?
You can choose 1x, 2x, or 4x the size of the artboard. 2x is the default and works well for websites and slides, while 4x is better for large displays or printing. Very large artboards are capped at 8,000 pixels on the longest side.
